Are You Ready For Hurricane Season?
This Hurricane season is forecast to be worse than normal, with up to twice the average number of named storms and major hurricanes predicted this year. Although hurricane season runs from June through November, our highest threat for hurricanes in Connecticut is from mid-August through mid-October.
Even without hurricanes, the threat of severe weather anywhere in the state is very real as demonstrated by the EF1 tornadoes in June and July, and hurricane force winds and major flooding in March.
What Is A Hurricane?
A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone in which the winds move in a counterclockwise motion. Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to coastlines and several hundred miles inland. Winds can exceed 155 miles per hour. Hurricanes and tropical storms can also spawn tornadoes and microbursts, create storm surges along the coast, and cause extensive damage from heavy rainfall.
Hurricanes are rated based on the speed of their winds. The higher the rating, the more damaging the wind will be. In addtion to wind damage, coastal areas and rivers may flood from storm surge and heavy rain.
During A Hurricane

- Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.
- Evacuate if you are told to do so by local authorities. This will help to ensure your safety.
