TMHD - Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness

For the past few years, the TMHD has been involved in developing and maintaining emergency response plans for various emergency situations, such as natural or manmade disasters and disease outbreaks. We partner with first responders, town governments, local organizations, and regional partners to ensure cooperation and strong communications. The district relies heavily on grant funding and volunteers in order to fulfill this vital function of public health. We participate on all levels (local, regional, and state) in emergency preparedness efforts.

A main component of TMHD emergency plans includes a comprehensive mass dispensing protocol for the distribution of antibiotics, antivirals and/or vaccines in response to a public health threat. Through grant funding we have been able to stockpile enough medical and ancillary supplies to run a mass dispensing clinic on 24 hours notice.

Volunteers

To respond efficiently and effectively during an emergency, we will need to depend on volunteers. Volunteer activities include both medical and non medical tasks. All types of volunteers are needed.

Non medical duties are varied and may include assisting with or distributing paperwork during vaccination clinics, traffic control, answering questions, etc. Medical and nursing responsibilities may include screenings during an emergency clinic, answering medical related questions, and providing vaccinations, etc. Training is available for all volunteers.

TMHD is affiliated with the Medical Reserve Core (MRC), a nationally recognized volunteer program. We are also partners with the Town of Stratford in this endeavor.
